Representing Injured Motorcyclists Throughout South Florida

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were more than 7,000 motorcycle accidents in 2004. In an effort to reduce the amount of serious injuries and fatalities caused by these motorcycle accidents, Florida has enacted a variety of motorcycle laws and regulations.

This is a brief overview of Florida motorcycle accident and insurance laws, and it should not be considered inclusive. For more information on the regulations and requirements, or to file a personal injury or wrongful death claim, you should contact an attorney:

  • Florida Helmet Law

Florida helmet law requires that all persons under the age of 21 wear a helmet when riding on a motorcycle. Those persons over 21 may choose not to wear a helmet so long as he or she has $10,000 worth of medical coverage insurance.

  • Florida Motorcycle License

Motorcyclists must have a motorcycle endorsement on their current driver's license or have a separate motorcycle driver's license. To obtain an endorsement or license, those who are under 21 must complete a safety course. Those over 21 can take a knowledge and skills test, much like regular driver's test.

  • Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

Motorcyclists in Florida are required to carry property damage and bodily injury insurance on their motorcycles in case of a serious or fatal motorcycle crash. Failure to carry the proper insurance may result in license revocation and civil court judgment.
